Inspiration: Childhood Valentines

Remember back in the day when you were a kid, and Valentine’s Day rolled around?

Usually the day was spent constructing mailboxes (which were just plain old paper bags covered in construction paper hearts, stickers, and glitter) and taping them to the desk. Then the valentine-giving frenzy began. Back then, Valentine’s Day wasn’t exclusive to someone you thought was cute. Everyone got a valentine. Even your teacher. So when the dust settled, and you found your way back to your desk, magically an overflowing bag of tiny envelopes would be there to await you! <3

AHH MEMORIES.

Last week I went through some of my old school papers from when I was young, and lo and behold, I came across a veritable -book- of valentines from elementary school! We’re talking Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Care Bears, Mario Brothers, My Little Pony, Garfield, Legend of Zelda, and the list goes on! Truly a nostalgia bomb. (Thanks Mom!) So, since it just so happens that it’s Valentine’s Day, I knew I had to share.

Here are a few of my favorites:

Hub Comics’ “In The Name of the Moon” Sailor Moon Art Show

Baby’s first art show! It was truly an honor to be chosen to be in this show amongst such great talent.

For my piece I wanted to explore the idea of Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) as if she had been a Japanese music idol. Much of the treatment was based on the 80s and early 90s, when Sailor Moon was created. It was a great way to merge illustration and typography together. See more here.

Thanks to Starlightslk for this great time-lapse video of the show! My piece is the very last work to be shown in the video.

More great photos taken by the lovely Betty Felon can be found here.

Inspiration: Eraser Collection

I get so much of my design inspiration from vintage things from my childhood. This is just a portion of my eraser collection that I display in an old Orbitz bottle. When I was a kid I would save up change to buy these at school. I love the classic 90’s motifs.
